Project "Evolution" 78' CB750K... the morphing continues...
« on: January 01, 2012, 09:05:31 pm »
I have christened this project "Evolution" in honor of all the various P.O.'s obvious attempts to earn a Darwin award. Found this gem on Christmas Day while visiting family in Ohio. I actually have to give the credit to the mrs for finding it and giving her blessing on the aquisition! I just have to bring her 250 Elite back to running condition (it sat too long) before I can start on mine. Checked it out and bought it the day after Christmas for the mighty sum of $300. Had this gone to anyone without the intestinal fortitude and understanding of what needs to be done to make this right could have ended badly. I may have saved a life! At the very least I have saved a SOHC from the crusher.

I have started some basic disassembly. Should I be concerned that I understand what I'm doing without consulting the service manual? I'm wondering, do I need professional help?

The good:

*It's remarkably complete, and the engine spins freely.

The bad:

*The centerstand stop appears to alternate between the chain and the rear brake plate stabilizer bar.
*Some wiring under the seat has been supplemented with what appears to be lamp cord.
*There is no adjustment left on the rear brake linkage.

*Telltale fuel stains on carb bowl and starter cover

*A return assist spring on the rear brake lever?

*The clutch cable has become one with the #4 header, OMG WHERE'S THE ENGINE MOUNT?!

*End of brake lever broke off, front caliper dragging, master cylinder void of all fluid. NO FRONT BRAKES! AIEEEEEE....

*I think the fork seals finally quit leaking since it looks like there might not be any fork oil left IN the forks...

*Hopefully there's still some oil left in the engine. OMG! WHERE'S THE MOTOR MOUNT BOLT?!

*A string around the "Idiot" lights as some sort of reminder?

*Ahhh... obviously a reminder to purchase the correct ignition switch! The string is the only thing holding the switch in place... anybody need an early model ignition switch (with two keys)?

*Footpeg rotated out of position when the engine mounting bolt that holds the footpegs on was replaced with 3/8" all-thread rod. Notice the brake lever stop rotated out of position...

*And finally, when placed next to my other K8 the shift lever appears to belong to a different model,

The ugly:

*The rattle-can red paint job.
*The aftermarket side cover.
*That hideous seat. At least the pan is in excellent condition.

What should scare you more is someone rode it like this....  As long as the engine is in decent shape internally looks like a good find.  Plus its so unoriginal you can do whatever you want to it.

Actually, it's fairly complete, just a few odds and ends here and there. I've got the wife's scooter (86' CH250 Elite) running well, now I just need to try and remember how all the plastic goes back together and where all the screws go!   :o I'll be starting this build very soon.  8)

It was lucky your wife found that.  Usually when something mutates that far from the original species, it ends up extinct.  I'm sure you will be able to regale us with wonderful tales of transmogrification into a rideable
entity.

Good luck,  I have a spare idiot light case if the string was a reminder to get a new one!  the little colored lights however have been parted out.

All right, time to get this party started! Finally made some time for the latest project:

Drained the old fuel:

A $7.00 tube of silcone as opposed to a new $5.00 tach cable seal:

Who needs those silly band clamps to connect the air cleaner to the carbs?

After unbolting the air cleaner from the frame the carbs fell out of their manifolds! Wonder where the vacuum leaks were coming from? Also, note the oily grime coating EVERYTHING. More on its point of origin later...

What are these strange hieroglyphs on the brake lever bolt? Alien inscriptions (like crop circles)? Almost looks like "grade 5 SAE", but surely no one would be THAT dumb! Fortunately, it looks like the bolt sacrificed its threads so that the original threads in the brake lever could live!

Quite the rats nest at the coils. New connectors from vintage connections should spruce things up.

Of course the speedo retention screw has the philips wallered out...

If ANYBODY tries to steal my left-hand drill bits their going to have a fight on their hands!

I guess one bolt will hold the horn... maybe an attempt to shave some weight?

The left fork (pic 1) sits almost a full millimeter lower in the tree than the right fork (pic 2):

WTF! I have never seen an oil filter bolt with a head this large. It measures EXACTLY one inch across. Now where did I leave that 25.4 mm socket...

Engine out of frame, under the watchful eye of the boss...

It's on the stand!

Only two bolts missing from shift cover and one bolt from the alternator cover helping to contribute to the oily grime on EVERYTHING. Another weight saving measure?

This hole looks like it should have a bolt in it... especially since oil pours out of it when I rotate the engine over onto its side. After looking at other engines (and the manual) there is indeed a bolt missing and appears to be the source of most of the oily discharge. Did I mention that it covers EVERYTHING?

Not bad for one day's work. I'll be starting on the frame and suspension to get the rolling chassis in order before starting on the engine. My goal here is to create a reliable daily driver that's easy on the eyes without breaking the bank. I'll ride it till at least the first 3K tune up and then put it up for sale to fund the next (bigger and better) CB750 project.

Forks are done.

Before picts:

New fork seals:

Just the right amount of your favorite elixir:

Some time on the buffing wheel and they're all dressed up with nowhere to go!

Now on to clean/paint the frame, swingarm (with new bushings too), kickstands, brake stay arm, and triple tree to complete the rolling chassis. Well, almost... I'll repack the wheel bearings and true the rims later. I'm anxious to get the motor squared away and back in the frame!

Happy to be of service!  ;D I figured this thread could be both informative and entertaining! It helps that I thoroughly enjoy fixing things and making them better than when I started, sometimes even better than new.  8)

Speaking of which, I was able to sneak a few minutes on the press and the swingarm is now sporting new bronze bushings:

Found two new uses for an engine stand:

To hold a motorcycle frame for priming:

and to hold a motorcycle frame for painting!  :o  ;D

I really appreciate the philosophy behind sending out the frame for sandblasting and painting/powder coating. OMG, after degreasing, washing, scraping, degreasing some more, washing again, more scraping, degreasing, washing, scraping, degreasing, washing, sanding, washing, sanding, and washing... WHEW! Thought I'd never get it ready for prime and paint.

Where did you get the bushings?
If it ain't raining, I'm riding.....~~{iii}?~~prost

If it sounds like I know what I'm talking about, it's because I cut and pasted from someone else.

Any news on the project?

This one got bumped to the back burner. I'll be starting another thread on the OTHER concurrent project that I picked up back in late July. It was quite complete, appeared to be in reasonably good condition, and SEEMED like it would be streetable with very little work...

YEAH RIGHT! Everywhere I look the "other" project has some other underlying issue that needed addressed, which would lead to even more discovery of yet something else! At least with the "Evolution" project I had a pretty clear idea what was going to be required, which was pretty much EVERYTHING short of an engine teardown. I just can't bring myself to teardown a 20,000 mile motor that others have logged well over 100,000 relatively trouble-free miles. I'll pick this one back up once I get the "other" one wrapped up and documented.

It wasn't supposed to take this long!

Well I thought maybe madmtnmotors was exaggerating when he said he probably saved someone from a deadly disaster but after that primitive pete on a string strap budget pic show that kept going and going and going and going....

 That was hilarious.

The "Evolution" is officially back underway (about damn time)! The engine is on the stand, and in the process of closing up the holes in preparation for cleaning/degreasing prior to disassembly, the following efforts to obviously shed yet even more weight were discovered:

>The four 6mm x 35mm head bolts (circled in red) as well as the 6mm x 90mm head bolt (also circled in red and documented in a previous post) were omitted.  :o
>Most of the washers from under the head nuts were omitted.  ???
>One oil control orifice (circled in blue) was omitted.  :o  :o  :o  Fortunately, it appears as though there were not many miles ridden in this condition since the cam bearing surfaces appear to be in very good condition (no scoring or scratches on either the cam or bearing surfaces).  8)
>One oil control o-ring was omitted (circled in green). Not sure how much of a weight savings was gained by this particular omission...  ???
>Two oil pan bolts were omitted as well.  ???

These weight savings would have been progressive, in that the oil leaks were so pervasive that the farther you rode the more weight that would have been shed (in the form of lost oil). The oil leaks were further supplemented by the placement of the cam bearing cap studs. Now we all know that these studs belong across the front side of each cam bearing location since these holes are bottomless and require thread sealer to prevent "weeping" oil. Well... two of the studs were placed at the far right bearing cap, while the other two studs were placed at the far left bearing cap without any hint of thread sealer to boot. The two center bearing caps were held in place by bolts on both sides of the bearing cap, also sans any trace of thread sealer. Not to mention the "musical chairs" that was played with the bearing caps since the bearing cap markings did not match the corresponding markings on the cam towers at their installed location. At least the caps can be arranged correctly since the cap markings do correspond to markings on the cradles (when properly oriented).

I was hoping not to have to tear too far into the motor, but it looks like it will go as far as pulling the cylinders (minimum) for piston/ring inspection and or replacement, smoothing of the head gasket surfaces, new cam chain tensioner, valve lapping, along with gaskets and seals.

Also figuring on:

>Oiling system maintenance: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=78643.0;topicseen
>New shocks
>New brakes
>New tires/tubes/rim strips
>New clutch plates
>Working my "mojo" on the wiring harness: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=137351.msg1549191#msg1549191
>New chain/sprockets/battery/filters/bulbs (as necessary)
>Electronic ignition
>More polishing and painting

Picking up the party right where it left off!

Some people just should not be permitted access to hand tools. Best case scenario here would be the rider would be stranded on the road somewhere. Worst case scenario the condition of this hack job of a motorcycle could have turned out very badly for anyone attempting to ride it in it's current state.

Quick update: Got most of the grime cleaned off the motor and pulled the head and cylinders.

 OMFG!

>There are two different styles of pistons used. Two are flat top (76 and earlier I believe) while the other two have a slight crown that I believe are original to the later 77/78 model. They all measure about 60.5mm dia.

>Looks like a half-hearted attempt to put a crosshatch on the cylinders was done with a wood rasp!

Picts to follow. I half expected to find missing wrist pin circlips, broken rings, etc.. Those possibilities have not been ruled out yet since I was feeling so queasy after a seeing the slugs and bores that I thought I was going to hurl. I had to walk away.

So I'll either harvest pistons and cylinders from low mileage donor mill, or I'll be documenting an 836 build.

Decisions, decisions!

Hey Wilbur....just ran across your thread and is a very entertaining read!  It is always comical on what some PO's do to their bike as a "fix", I've had a few of them too.
