No internal mods at all, the gear is under the cover, if you have the cover off to replace that alternator then its simple...?

I'm confused about the confusion as well. You have to remove the stock rotor in order to install the upgraded alternator. With the stock rotor removed, the starter gear is right there...
A stock starter gear could always be reinstalled with the stock alternator if you were concerned about being able to return it to stock condition. A used starter gear in good condition should not be hard to find. In fact, you could even secure a used starter gear and send that one in for modification. This would prevent any "down time" while waiting for the required mods to be made.
This would leave you with the original starter gear and alternator as a backup in the event that the new, 32 amp alternator, ever fails...
